Use case CIE: Automated Visual Inspection Demo

04.09.2026

This video demonstrates the automated inspection of HPDC (High-Pressure Die Casting) automotive components using a FANUC industrial robot. Two different part types, Part 1 and Part 2, are inspected for both surface and thread defects.

The video shows the HMI developed within the SoliDAIR project by THL. It is the system that controls the robotic inspection process. The operator selects the part to inspect (Part 1 or Part 2), clicks Start, and the inspection begins. The robot moves through predefined positions, captures images at each stop, and runs defect detection and measurement automatically.

Results appear in real time: the captured image with detected defects, the pass/fail status per component, a phase progress bar, and a running session summary. The operator can pause or stop the process at any time, and reset the running totals as needed. At the end of the session, results and statistical graphs are exported for traceability and reporting.

As the robot scans the components, the computer vision system draws a bounding box around each detected defect on the live camera feed. This annotation includes a confidence score, indicating how reliable the detection is, and the estimated size value for each defect. The session summary tracks Parts Inspected, OK/NOK counts, and defect totals by type (Surface, Thread), giving the operator immediate visibility into overall inspection quality.
